Africa & the Middle East
Monumental art takes many forms, and its history does not stop at the boundaries of a single artistic tradition.
Across Africa and the Middle East, artworks are woven into the architecture of cities and communities: on façades, inside public buildings, along civic bazaars, and within everyday surroundings. Some are prominent works by recognised artists; others are encountered almost incidentally, embedded in buildings and places that were never designed as museums.
RACMAS seeks out these works and records them where we encounter them.
Discoveries
Unlike some of our larger regional initiatives, our work in Africa and the Middle East is currently built around individual discoveries rather than a single, defined programme.
The gallery below brings these discoveries together, preserving their location and visual record while allowing new information to be added as research continues.
