Destinations
Monumental art belongs to places. Its forms, materials, subjects and meanings are shaped by the environments in which it was created.
The destinations below represent the geographical fields currently covered by our research organization. Some are the focus of dedicated projects; others are growing collections of individual discoveries.
Soviet & Eastern Bloc
From Moscow to Bishkek, Warsaw to Sofia, monumental art became deeply integrated into the architecture and public spaces of the socialist world.
The Atlas Sovieticus brings together this vast and diverse body of work.
Latin America
A long tradition of integrating art into architecture has produced an extraordinary landscape of murals, mosaics, reliefs and other monumental works throughout Latin America.
The first RACMAS mapping initiative in the region focuses on Mexico.
Africa & the Middle East
A growing collection of discoveries from across a geographically and culturally diverse region — from individual architectural works to pieces whose histories are still being uncovered. Our current scope is set at Egypt, and the mosaics and murals to be found there.
A growing global network
These destinations represent the beginning of RACMAS’s international work. As our research develops, new locations, artworks, collaborations, preservation initiatives, and restoration projects will be added to the network.
RACMAS is building a global body of knowledge around monumental arts — one destination at a time.
